KABUL, Afghanistan – Army Lt. Gen. Daniel P. Bolger assumed command of NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan (NTM-A) and Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan (CSTC-A) from Army Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, during a change of command ceremony today at Camp Eggers, Kabul, Afghanistan.
Bolger served as the deputy chief of staff, G-3/5/7, HQDA, in Washington from April 2010 to November 2011. From 2008 to 2010, Bolger commanded the 1st Cavalry Division in both Fort Hood, Texas, and Iraq, where he served as the commanding general, Multi-National Division and United States Division in Baghdad supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“I’m honored to join this great team. We are many that were unified by one mission: to help the Afghan National Security Forces to defend their country,” said Bolger. “We will do so, the way we’ve always done so, shohna ba shohna, ooga pa ooga, shoulder to shoulder.”
In addition to the distinguished highlights of his military career, Bolger is also an accomplished author, having written and published several books, including: “Dragons at War,” “Americans at War,” "Savage Peace,” “The Battle for Hunger Hill,” “Feast of Bones,” and “Death Ground.”
Caldwell assumed command of NTM-A/CSTC-A in November 2009. He’s been nominated for command of U.S. Army North.
Activated in 2009, NTM-A is a coalition of 37 contributing nations charged with assisting the government of Afghanistan in generating a capable and sustainable Afghan National Security Force ready to take the lead of their country’s security by 2014.
