KABUL, Afghanistan — A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents during an operation targeting an insurgent leader in Nizam-E Shahid district, Herat province, Oct. 16.

The target of the operation is responsible for kidnappings, and planning and coordinating attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Herat.

The security force was fired upon by insurgents with rocket propelled grenades, heavy machine gun and small arms fire. Assessing the direct threat the force returned fire, killing the insurgents.

Afghan security forces also detained one suspected insurgent for processing and further questioning.

In Khak-E Afghan district, Zabul province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents during an operation targeting a Taliban leader, Oct. 16. During the operation the security force received small arms fire from insurgents in the area. Assessing a direct threat the force returned fire, killing the insurgents. A quantity of small arms, ammunition and communication devices was seized during the operation. Numerous suspected insurgents were also detained and taken in for processing and further questioning.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force patrol discovered a narcotics cache in Zharay district, Kandahar province, Oct. 17. The cache consisted of 176 pounds (80 kilograms) of hashish and was confiscated for safe disposal at a later date. Three suspected insurgents were also detained during the operation.

In Kandahar district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force patrol discovered a weapons cache, Oct. 17. The cache consisted of 12 80 mm rounds. The weapons were safely destroyed by the force.

East

In Musa Khel district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force patrol discovered a weapons cache, Oct. 17. The cache consisted of five improvised explosive devices, four IED primers, three hand grenades, one grenade fuse, various ammunition, and two Afghan National Army uniforms. The weapons were safely destroyed on site. Two suspected insurgents were also detained during the operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during an operation in search of an insurgent leader in Ghazni district, Ghazni province, Oct. 16. The leader is responsible for the deaths of four Afghan police officers and numerous improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. The detainees were taken for processing and further questioning.
