KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed six insurgents, including a Taliban leader, during a security operation in Chahar Bolak district, Balkh province.

The leader planned attacks on aircraft in the region, as well as acquired weapons for use by insurgent fighters in the Western Balkh Province. Throughout the operation, the security force was engaged by multiple armed insurgents. Responding to direct enemy fire, the force killed six insurgents. One individual was armed with a PKM machine gun and the others with AK-47 assault rifles. No civilians were injured during the operation.

Also during the operation, the force detained three suspected insurgents and confiscated multiple weapons, including a machine gun, assault rifles and fragmentation grenades.

In Deh-e Salah district, Baghlan province, yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache. The cache, discovered during a security operation, consisted of one recoilless rifle, one 82 mm round, 84 anti-personnel mines, 46 anti-tank mines, six rockets and 110 fuses. The security force safely destroyed all the items.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered 7,128 pounds (3,240 kg) of hashish in Panjwai district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The drugs were seized for safe destruction at a later date.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Zurmat district, Paktiya province. The leader joins insurgent fighters from different groups to conduct attacks throughout the region. The security force detained two suspected insurgents during the operation.
