Engineers thwart culvert attacks

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Afghans residing in Regional Command Southwest’s area of operation, as well as coalition forces who work in the area, now can be less wary of improvised explosive devices hidden in culverts.

Marines and sailors with 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group (Forward) recently began using Culvert Denial Systems, which are rebar cages set in concrete, as a deterrent for IED positioning inside drainage pipes that allow water to flow under roadways.

The cages currently in use are designed in three different sizes and make roads in southwestern Afghanistan safer to travel on.
