KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — Troops and civilians deployed to Kandahar Airfield have new menu options at four of the seven dining facilities on KAF that will remind them of home. The company providing the new menu is the Defense Logistics Agency.
“It’s a high quality menu to start, and it’s very U.S. centric,” said Kevin Harris, senior planning and logistics officer at the NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency, the company overseeing the menu transformation. “With the DLA menu, there is a wider choice of things the U.S. population is used to and likes.”
The transition began March 3 at the Independence Hall dining facility. The Niagara and North Line DFACs switched to the new menu on March 15, and the Monti DFAC will swap out their menu April 1.
The Afghanistan 28-day menu provides cuisine such as hamburgers, corn dogs and other familiar fare U.S. servicemembers and civilians enjoy eating back home.
NAMSA has been working hard alongside the food staff to prepare for this change, said Harris. The amount of foot traffic has increased greatly in Independence Hall due to the overhaul in the menu. Harris also states that he notices an increase in morale among the servicemembers and improved overall quality of service.
Being far from home in Afghanistan, increased morale and appetizing food can be small triumphs in a deployed location.
