KABUL, Afghanistan – A joint Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force vehicle checkpoint came under heavy fire in Tagab District, Kapisa province, yesterday.

As the joint security force was manning the checkpoint, they came under sniper fire. Assessing the situation, Afghan security forces and ISAF decided not to engage the snipers due to civilians in close proximity to the area.

As the engagement progressed, the security force started receiving more accurate and potentially lethal fire by insurgents using recoilless rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, and small-arms fire. The civilians in the area had moved away from the insurgent’s firing position and with the area clear of civilians, the security force returned fire with accurate and lethal fire.

During the three-hour engagement, the security force killed more than five insurgents.

Initial reporting indicates no civilians were injured during the engagement.
