KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition force killed Mirza Jan, a Taliban leader and facilitator for Ghazni-based senior leadership, during an overnight operation in Ghazni province Tuesday.

He distributed improvised explosive devices and IED components to insurgent groups in the area, and reportedly distributed more than 90 IED's during the September parliamentary elections.

Intelligence reports led the security force to a compound in Syandi Sofla in Ghazni district to search for the targeted individual. As the security force approached, an insurgent carrying a weapon ran from the targeted compound and attempted to hide.

The security force pursued him in an attempt to capture him peacefully, but when he threatened the security force, they shot and killed him. Upon further inspection, the security force identified him as Mirza Jan, the targeted individual for the operation.

The women and children remained safe and protected throughout the operation.
