KABUL, Afghanistan – A coalition force conducting a mounted patrol in Helmand province killed more than 10 insurgents and discovered improvised explosive device materials during combat operations early Saturday.
While conducting the patrol in Reg-e Khan Neshin District, the coalition force came under small-arms fire and after positively identifying several groups of armed insurgents, returned fire with small arms, 25mm rounds and anti-tank missiles.
The patrol also discovered and destroyed a large IED component and drug cache consisting of 2.5 tons of ammonium nitrate, 2 tons of precursor chemicals, six cell phones, two pressure cookers, 18 pressure plates, various weapons and 10kg of opium.
The weapons and drugs were safely destroyed at the site.
