FORT SILL, Okla. — Fort Sill will host its annual 9/11 Remembrance Run/Walk on Friday, Sept. 11, at McNair Hall, inviting the community to gather in remembrance of the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
This year’s observance marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Participants may choose from a 4-mile run, 4-mile ruck, or 1-mile fun run/walk. The event will kick off with a reenlistment ceremony at 7:35 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony, salute cannons, remarks from the Fires Center of Excellence Commanding General Brig. Gen. Patrick Costello and then the run will begin promptly at 8:05 a.m.
“On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Fort Sill is honored to bring Soldiers, Families and the surrounding community together to remember those we lost and to reflect on the service and sacrifice that followed,” Col. Jay Morgan said, Fort Sill garrison commander.
Although registration is closed, all are invited to attend and participate. The event is open to the public and free participation is available for all. Organizers encourage anyone who has already registered for the run to pick up registration packets before Friday at the Patriot Club during normal operating hours.
"This run isn't just about fitness—it’s about Family,” Sarah Gersper said, Director of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation at Fort Sill. “Twenty-five years later, we still run side by side so our Soldiers, Families and neighbors have a shared space to pause, remember and honor the extraordinary sacrifices made that day and every day since."
Participants and visitors should plan and arrive early. Fort Sill expects increased traffic Friday morning due to the remembrance event and unit participation.
Gate Access:
**** Use of Key Gate East is discouraged unless attending Basic Combat Training graduation.
Visitors without a DoD ID card should obtain a visitor pass from the Fort Sill’s Visitor Welcome Center in advance and be prepared for 100% ID checks at installation entry points.
Parking options include the PX, Commissary, Honeycutt Fitness Center, Patriot Club Field Artillery Museum, Air Defense Artillery Training Support Facility and Twin Oaks Bowling Alley. Attendees should be prepared to walk to McNair Hall.
To facilitate the run and associated 9/11 remembrance activities, Fort Sill residents and visitors should expect road closures and delays from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. north of Randolph Road and south of Fort Sill Golf Course, particularly in the neighborhoods of White Wolf, Academic Heights and Old Post Quadrangle.
Fort Sill also advises attendees that animals are not permitted at this event and should be left at home.

For families at Freedom Elementary School, some bus routes will run 10 minutes earlier that morning. Parents with attendance questions should reference the Freedom Elementary Facebook page or contact the school directly.
