Wasp Sailors Volunteer at Tarrallton Elementary School

NORFOLK, Va. (Aug. 24, 2026) Sailors assigned to amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) volunteered at Tarrallton Elementary for a back-to-school welcoming event, Aug. 24, 2026.

Wasp Sailors supported Tarrallton staff by opening car doors, greeting students and escorting students to their classrooms. In the classroom, Sailors assisted teachers with welcoming students, helping them find their seats, and unpacking student bags for their first day of school.

“About 75% of our community is military connected,” said Kim Hulse, Tarrallton’s principal. “Having familiar faces dressed similar to mom and dad welcoming and greeting our students makes the transition easier for the kids.”

Tarrallton Elementary hosts the event annually, bringing together service members, teachers, families, and community partners to help make the back-to-school experience exciting. For the Sailors who volunteer, the event offers an opportunity to connect with the community and make a positive impact on the students they meet.

“Giving back and supporting the community is very important to us as service members,” said Religious Program Specialist 1st Class Jamie Hamm, a member of Wasp’s community relations committee. “Giving back and supporting the community is very important to us as service members.”

Through continued involvement, Sailors can leave a lasting impression on the next generation and strengthen the relationship between the Navy and the communities it serves.

“I hope to inspire the younger generation to become future sailors,” said Religious Program Specialist Third Class Daphne Passos. “Each time that we get to give back to the community is one step further in building lasting relationships.”

As part of Wasp’s ongoing commitment to giving back to the community, the community relations committee represents an opportunity for Sailors of all ranks and rates to give back to the public and engage with the community.

Wasp is currently homeported at Naval Station Norfolk.
