JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va –Golfers at The Pines Golf Course on Fort Eustis may notice environmental crews at work across the fairways. Specialists are investigating the former Langley Field Gunnery Range and Bombing Target H to locate potential buried munitions and assess any environmental impacts under federal cleanup guidelines. The investigation is being conducted following the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act to better understand the presence and extent of potential buried munitions and associated environmental impacts. The project focuses on areas historically used during World War II for military training. Historical records indicate that Langley Field Gunnery Range served as a pattern gunnery range between 1941 and 1945 and potentially supported anti-tank training. Practice bombs were used at Bombing Target H for aerial target practice. Previous investigations identified evidence indicating the potential presence of munitions, supporting the recommendation to advance these sites to the Remedial Investigation phase under the Military Munitions Response Program. The investigation has been taking effectin several phases. Crews began by using underground scans to find buried metal objects, then dug up selected sites. Later phases may test soil and groundwater to see if past military operations affectedthe surrounding area. The Remedial Investigation is intended to collect the information necessary to determine the nature and extent of any munitions-related hazards and support future environmental decision-making. During the current stage, the work is investigative in nature and does not indicate immediate risk to public health. Findings from the investigation will be evaluated as additional field data becomes available. To minimize impacts on installation operations, work areas were carefully planned to avoid active training ranges, water bodies, golf course infrastructure, and other sensitive areas. Temporary safety exclusion zones may be established during intrusive investigation activities. These measures are designed to protect personnel, contractors, and the public since controlled detonations of buried munitions are required if unexploded ordnance are discovered.
