JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii — Senior Airman Ryan Sasaki, a cryptologic analyst and reporter with the 201st Intelligence Squadron, was recently recognized as one of Hawaii Air National Guard’s 2026 Outstanding Airman of the 1st Quarter Award recipients for developing a set of task management tools using the computer software Python to automate daily intelligence workflows. Sasaki’s custom tools streamline the process of taking data from collection through processing and analysis. "Most of the tools take a CSV (comma-separated values) full of data that contains a bunch of information from a table, like a spreadsheet and it will reformat it in a way that's better for our purposes," Sasaki said. "And it does so at the click of a button.” By instantly converting complex datasets and CSV files, his tools eliminated tedious manual data entry and saved approximately 800 hours annually on routine operational tasks. Developing each tool required about a week of focused effort. It began with writing instructions in a text editor and loading necessary code libraries, which were then tested directly through the terminal, a computer interface system where commands are typed in. On-screen feedback made it easy to tweak and refine the code in real time until it functioned reliably. The work continues to today. For Sasaki, the project is never truly over—maintenance is continuous, requiring routine troubleshooting to catch new bugs as they pop up. Sasaki’s love for coding came from his dad, stating that it’s in his blood. “I grew up in a house with computers, my dad liked computers a lot so there were always computers around. I just thought learning to code was cool,” Sasaki said. “My dad does it for a living. That probably also piqued my interest there. It's like, oh, I should do what dad does.” In addition to being recognized as one of the HIANG’s top performing Airmen of the quarter, last year his contributions earned him the Air Force Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance Award Program at the group wing, and 16th Air Force level for his category. Sasaki attributes his success to a supportive unit culture that encourages innovation without administrative barriers. He feels when leadership gives you the freedom to bring your unique talents to the table, It allows creativity to thrive without unnecessary constraints. "I really want to emphasize how valuable it is to have leadership that allows you to explore your interests in a way that helps the team," Sasaki said. “I've been lucky so far, I think. No red tape, no pushback, just encouragement.” Outside the squadron, Sasaki maintains strong ties to the community where he grew up. Raised in Kapolei, Hawaii, he pursued his interest in problem-solving and academics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where he earned a master’s degree in mathematics. His educational background continues to influence the analytical approach he brings to his military career and software development. Sasaki also dedicates his time to serving the local community. He regularly volunteers with the Mālama Learning Center, participating in conservation projects that help care for Hawaiʻi’s natural resources. He also visits elementary school career fairs, where he has opportunities to engage with students and share his experiences, extending his service beyond the squadron and into the community.
