The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) deployed its new Food Truck Corral at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, bringing a diverse selection of local food trucks to the installation from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every week Monday through Friday.
For years, Sailors and civilian employees have been limited to on-site dining options, often requiring them to leave the local area to find meals. The Food Truck Corral, located across from the NEX mini mart and gas station on Towway Drive, provides convenient access to a variety of fresh, healthy and locally recognized dining options just steps from the workplace.
Curated by NEX Norfolk Food Services team, the rotating roster includes fan-favorite local food trucks with menus featuring everything from quick grab-and-go meals and fast-casual fare to healthy, power-packed options and popular treats such as coffee and ice cream.
Excitement for the Food Truck Corral started building before the first truck even arrived. News spread quickly after @NavyExchangeNorfolk announced the opening on social media, with Sailors sharing that once they saw the post, they began making plans to meet up with shipmates, chatting about menu options, debating their favorite food trucks and deciding what they were going to pick up for lunch. Conversations spread through group chats, phone calls and text messages across the installation.
From first-time food truck foodies to longtime food truck connoisseurs, patrons said they were excited to have new dining options available without needing to leave the installation. Many appreciated having a variety of choices beyond traditional fast-food offerings, while others looked forward to seeing which local favorites would rotate through the corral each week.
Retired Master Chief Mike Albeser, a Navy veteran with 29 years of service, said he especially appreciated having an ice cream option available.
"This is great," said Luke Bryan, a civilian technician. "You know where to come, and you know there will be something different to choose from, giving people more options right here on base."
The Food Truck Corral reflects NEXCOM’s continued commitment to improving Sailors' quality of life by providing convenient access to healthy and diverse dining options while also supporting local businesses.
