BANGOR, Maine — What started as an idea to improve maintenance capabilities has grown into a force multiplier for the 101st Air Refueling Wing Machine Shop, thanks to a partnership with ARCWERX and a commitment to innovation.
Master Sgt. Christopher Look, assigned to the 101st Air Refueling Wing Machine Shop, has been involved with ARCWERX for several years, helping identify innovative solutions that improve mission capability. Recently, he attended an ARCWERX innovation workshop at Bangor Air National Guard Base, where airmen from across the Air National Guard were able to collaborate on solving operational challenges and sharing innovative ideas.
One of the most significant outcomes of the partnership has been the addition of advanced 3D printing capabilities to the Machine Shop. Through ARCWERX funding, the shop acquired 3D printers that allow airmen to manufacture both plastic and metal components used to support aircraft maintenance and other mission requirements.
The 3D printers have reduced production timelines for certain parts and expanded the shop's ability to rapidly respond to maintenance needs. The Machine Shop has used its capabilities to produce components supporting not only the 101st but also other U.S. Air Force installations and military branches, demonstrating how local innovation can provide far-reaching solutions to the broader innovation ecosystem. The success of the Machine Shop's additive manufacturing program serves as an example of how ARCWERX helps transform ideas into real operational capabilities. By connecting innovators with funding and resources, ARCWERX enables airmen to develop solutions that improve readiness across the Air National Guard.
The 101st also executes innovation efforts for the international innovation ecosystem. In June 2025, ARCWERX launched the State Partnership Innovation Network, or SPIN, an innovation education and support resource aligned with the State Partnership Program. Montenegro, Maine’s state partner, participated in a 3D printing innovation project with the 101st, alleviating supply chain constraints for equipment parts for Montenegro's navy. Members of the 101st showcased partnership building, capability sharing and innovative solutions. The 101st proved innovation application, utilizing innovation education and resources to create opportunities to share innovative ideas and problem-solving approaches that enhance operational readiness.

As innovation continues to expand throughout the 101st Air Refueling Wing, Ruiz encourages the Guard/Reserve innovation ecosystem to collaborate with their State Partnership Program Teams.
