DULUTH, Minn. – The 148th Fighter Wing transferred leadership during a change of command ceremony Aug. 1, 2026, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the wing.
U.S. Air Force Col. Curtis Grayson assumed command from U.S. Air Force Col. Nathan Aysta during the ceremony, which was presided over by U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Shawn Manke, Minnesota Adjutant General.
The event brought together Airmen, families, leaders, and elected officials from across Minnesota to witness the transition. A longstanding military tradition, it marks the formal transfer of leadership and responsibility from one commander to the next through the passing of the guidon, symbolizing the continuity of command and the unit's enduring commitment to accomplishing its mission.
"Reflecting on his four years leading the wing, Aysta thanked the Airmen under his command during his final remarks. “Less than one percent of the population chooses to serve in the military, and I am proud to serve alongside each one of you,” he said. “I have full confidence in the148th FW'sfuture, and I know you will continue to excel in the years ahead.”
For Grayson, assuming command represents the culmination of a career spent serving the wing. A lifelong member of the 148th Fighter Wing, he began his military career in aircraft maintenance before earning his commission to become a fighter pilot. Now, he steps in to lead the organization that has shaped his career for the past 34 years.
“I cannot thank you all enough for trusting me with the privilege of leading such an incredible organization,” said Grayson. “I promise to work hard every day to keep that trust and continue to serve the men and women of the 148th Fighter Wing.”
As commander, Grayson said his foremost priority is people, recognizing that the wing's success is built on the dedication of its more than 1,000 Airmen. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining wartime readiness, ensuring the wing remains trained, equipped, and prepared to answer the nation's call whenever needed.
Looking ahead, Grayson said the wing will continue building on its legacy of excellence by investing in modernization and strengthening partnerships at the local, state, and national levels to ensure the 148th Fighter Wing remains ready to meet tomorrow's challenges.
As the guidon passed from one commander to the next, the ceremony marked both the close of one chapter and the beginning of another, reaffirming the wing's enduring commitment to its Airmen, its mission, and the nation it serves.
