MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. — The 23d Logistics Readiness Squadron implemented an innovative oxygen transport system for aviators at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, July 23, 2026.
The proof-of-concept demonstration, led by the Air Force Petroleum Agency in partnership with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), used a commercially available 5,000-gallon intermodal container to transport liquid oxygen. The effort allowed the larger mobile system to provide a more efficient way to move oxygen to contingency locations where traditional supply methods may be limited.
“This gives us another tool in the toolbox of how we get liquid oxygen into a theater,” said Master Sgt. Daniel Greene, 23d LRS Fuels Management Flight chief. “Bringing in 5,000 gallons, we now have the ability to expand our capabilities.”
Traditionally, the Air Force relies on smaller 500-gallon containers that are transported by air to support capabilities in forward operating locations. The new system could allow larger quantities of liquid oxygen, reducing the number of shipments required while expanding operational flexibility.
“I think this tank is more of a benefit for the mobility side,” said Senior Airman Shaun Tenney, 23d LRS fuels facilities technician. “We can hook it up to a trailer, get it to a ship and use it wherever it’s needed.”
Tenney is responsible for operating the system, monitoring tank pressure and filling the carts with liquid oxygen. The liquid oxygen is later converted into breathable gas for pilots and supports aeromedical missions.
Working with a new system has presented challenges, but Tenney said learning its unique configuration and higher operating pressures has expanded his experience as a fuels service controller.
“It’s new, it’s configured differently and it’s been interesting learning how everything works,” Tenney said. “It was a pleasure to be one of the first to work with it.”
As the 23d LRS continues evaluating the new transportation method, the project will help Air Force and Defense Logistics Agency officials evaluate whether the transport system will provide another option for delivering critical resources to Airmen operating in austere environments. The Flying Tigers continue to find innovative solutions that can improve lethality and readiness in austere environments.
