NMRTC Bremerton honors Navy Medical Service Corps legacy on 79th anniversary

BREMERTON, Wash. – Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Bremerton marks the 79th birthday of the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps (MSC) during a celebration on the command quarterdeck, Aug. 4, 2026.

Established on Aug. 4, 1947, when President Harry S. Truman signed the Army-Navy Medical Service Corps Act into law, the MSC was created to apply critical wartime health care lessons from World War II. The legislation ensured that specialized administrative, clinical, and scientific medical talent would remain an enduring, integrated pillar of naval readiness.

What began as a foundational cadre of 251 original plank owners across four distinct fields – supply and administration, optometry, allied sciences, and pharmacy – has grown into a force of more than 3,000 active-duty and reserve officers spanning 31 specialized disciplines.

"We are the bloodline that ultimately supports the warfighters," said Lt. Wilfred Flores, chief of medical logistics at Naval Hospital Bremerton. "As MSC officers, we are continually contributing to the joint force, developing future leaders and planting trees that we will never see grow."

Essential Impact on NMRTC Bremerton At NMRTC Bremerton, MSC officers serve across three core sub-corps operational branches:

• Health care administration: Managing operational logistics, health information technology, patient administration, and facility support to maintain seamless hospital operations.
• Health care clinicians: Delivering direct patient care in critical specialties, including optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, clinical psychology, and physician assistants.
• Health care scientists: Safeguarding warfighter health through specialized roles in environmental health, industrial hygiene, biochemistry, and radiation health physics.

Working alongside doctors, nurses, and hospital corpsmen, MSC officers at NMRTC Bremerton directly support the physical and psychological medical readiness of Pacific Northwest warfighters, operational units, and military families.

Tuesday’s ceremony featured a traditional cake-cutting honor – a Navy tradition where the command’s most senior and most junior MSC officers slice the cake together to symbolize the passage of knowledge, heritage, and leadership across generations of service.

NMRTC Bremerton supports active-duty warfighters, retirees, and their families, maintaining operational readiness through patient-centered health care, preventive medicine, and medical research.
