For Gary R. Banaszak, a lifetime of dedication to the United States Navy can be summarized not just by his decades of service, but by the enduring "Seaman Spirit" he brings to the job every day. Banaszak is leaving behind a legacy of hard work, patriotism, and a creatively penned poem honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary. Currently serving as a Contract Specialist for Naval District Washington’s Fleet & Family Readiness Program (NAF Procurement) at NAS Patuxent River, Banaszak is wrapping up a civilian career that spans more than 21 years. But his connection to the Navy runs much deeper. Before his time as a civilian contractor, Banaszak served a full 20-year active-duty career as a Mess Specialist. A standout moment in his naval career came in 1995 when he was named Sailor of the Year while serving aboard the historic USS Constitution. "Jeff loves that ship almost as much as me," Banaszak joked, referring to his colleague, Pax River N9 director Jeffery Sias. Although Banaszak arrived at PAX in 2000, he finished the final leg of his active-duty career in Norfolk, Virginia, while his family remained in Maryland. Between his active duty and civilian roles, Banaszak has dedicated over four decades to supporting the Navy's mission. Known for his enthusiasm and willingness to help, Banaszak recently channeled his experiences into a creative project for his colleagues. When the Naval District Washington (NDW) HR team asked for his guidance on their "America 250" office decoration effort, which featured a skeleton dressed in a Sailor’s uniform, Banaszak didn't just offer advice. He named the skeletal sailor "Seaman Spirit" and suggested the character needed something to say. What started as a simple idea quickly grew into a beautiful tribute. "I started Seaman Spirit’s speech with ‘Avast Ye Matey’ to gain your attention… the rest came out as the poem I wrote during lunch," Banaszak said. "It captures the experiences and patriotism of many of our long-time veterans, as well as a nod to our current members in our military for keeping us free." The creative addition was a massive success, helping the HR team win the office decoration contest. Now, as the decorations come down and his final days at the office approach, Banaszak is looking forward to his next chapter. He plans to retire to Virginia, where he will be closer to his grandchildren. From the decks of the USS Constitutionto the offices of NAS Patuxent River, Gary Banaszak has left an indelible mark on the Navy community. While "Seaman Spirit" may be a skeleton in a uniform, the real spirit of service belongs to the man who gave him a voice. We wish him fair winds and following seas in his well-deserved retirement.
Seaman Sprit By Gary Banaszak
Avast ye Matey, For I’ve been in the Navy, neigh these 250 years.
I’ve sailed the Seven Seas, In War and in Peace, With broad grins and salty tears.
My Comrades gave all, Through the rise and the fall, Their bravery outlasting their fears.
For Freedom! we cried, For Freedom we died, Our efforts made nary a veer.
Our Sons and Daughters remain, To carry the strain, Backed by our ghostly cheers.
All this we give, So generations may live, Another 250 years.
