Family, friends, colleagues and fellow service members gathered Aug. 3, 2026, to celebrate U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Kurt Russell’s promotion from master sergeant to sergeant major.
Col. Shawn Nokes hosted the ceremony, which included ceremonial remarks, the reading of the promotion orders and the pinning of Russell’s new rank by his wife.
The promotion orders recognized Russell’s patriotism, valor, fidelity, professional excellence, demonstrated leadership and dedicated service to the Army National Guard. His promotion became effective Aug. 1, 2026.
Russell began his military career in the U.S. Navy in 1996 before joining the Illinois Army National Guard in 2005. Since then, he has served in numerous leadership and staff positions at the unit, battalion, brigade and state levels.
His assignments have included positions as a first sergeant, senior human resources noncommissioned officer, operations sergeant major and personnel management branch noncommissioned officer in charge. Russell also deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and supported the Illinois National Guard’s response to several state emergencies.
During his remarks, Nokes reflected on knowing and serving alongside Russell for approximately two decades. He recalled meeting Russell when they served together in a transportation company and recognized the leadership Russell demonstrated early in his career.
“The leadership he showed as a young E-4 was astounding,” Nokes said.
Nokes also remembered Russell as a calm and dependable leader during their deployment to Iraq. Russell supported nighttime operations while also performing several additional responsibilities that helped protect Soldiers and keep missions moving.
“I knew then you were going far, and far you went,” Nokes said. “Your resume speaks for itself. I’m so proud of you.”
Russell’s career reflects a continued commitment to military education and professional development. He has completed numerous leadership, operational and occupational courses and is currently attending the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy.
The ceremony also recognized the important role Russell’s family has played throughout his military career. His wife pinned on his new rank, while family members, friends and fellow service members joined him in celebrating the milestone. Russell later addressed those in attendance and greeted additional friends and family by phone.
The promotion marks the beginning of Russell’s next chapter of service and leadership in the Illinois Army National Guard.
