MIHAIL KOGĂLNICEANU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ROMANIA- On July 12, 2026, Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport turned into an unusual setting for one of Romania's top TV shows as MasterChef România filmed a unique episode there. For a day, military vehicles and aircraft shared space with cooking stations, cameras, and contestants who aimed to impress a unique group of judges: multinational soldiers serving NATO's mission along the Alliance's eastern flank.
Rather than cooking for celebrity chefs, three teams of contestants took on the challenge of preparing meals for about 40 service members from the United States, Romania, and France. After tasting each team's menu, the soldiers voted for their favorite dish in order to pick a winner.
The contestants also cooked for senior military leaders and local government officials who joined the event.
The episode gave viewers a look behind the scenes at life on one of NATO's busiest bases in southeastern Europe and let service members take part in a well-known TV show. More importantly, it highlights how taking a break from daily routines can help build stronger relationships among allied nations.
The soldiers who joined the tasting are part of a multinational contingent at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base that works together every day to support NATO's mission. While they usually train side by side, events like the MasterChef România challenge give them a chance to connect in a new way; through conversation, shared experiences, and food.
All day, contestants raced against the clock while cameras captured every moment of the competition. The smell of grilled meats, fresh vegetables, and traditional flavors filled the air as soldiers watched the teams cook. When the meals were ready, the service members tasted each menu and voted for the team they thought had the best mix of taste, presentation, and creativity. Even though only one team of chefs could win, the focus was mainly on bringing people together, not on who took first place. Soldiers from three countries sat together, talked about the meals, compared their favorites, and shared stories from their time serving together.
"Partnerships are built one interaction at a time," said U.S. Army Col. Steven Overby, commander of Area Support Group Black Sea. "Our soldiers train together every day in support of NATO's mission. Events like this remind us that strong alliances are also built through personal connections. Food is friendship. Sharing a meal creates opportunities to build trust, strengthen friendships, and reinforce the bonds that make us stronger together."
His words pointed to a bigger purpose for the event. Military readiness relies on training, cooperation, and shared commitment, while trust develops from the relationships between the people carrying out those jobs. Whether it's during joint exercises, community events, or gatherings like this, chances to connect outside of regular duty hours helps build the partnerships that support a collective defense.
For many soldiers, being part of a TV show was a completely new experience.
"It was a fun experience to be part of something completely different," said U.S. Army Pfc. James White, an infantryman assigned to the 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division. "We work alongside soldiers from different countries every day, so sitting down together to enjoy a meal felt like another way to build those relationships. It reminded me that food really does bring people together."
For the contestants, this challenge was a chance to cook for people whose daily work goes far beyond the kitchen. Making meals for service members supporting NATO's eastern flank meant adapting to a new setting and understanding the importance of the population they were serving.
The event also gave Romanian TV viewers a look at the multinational mission at nearby Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base. By showing soldiers from the United States, Romania, and France sharing a meal, the episode highlighted the teamwork and cooperation that define NATO's presence in the area.
After all the soldiers tasted each menu and voted, one team was named the winner. But the most important part of the day went beyond just the results of the competition.
The day showed that partnerships grow not just during military exercises and missions, but also through shared experiences that lead to conversation, understanding, and friendship. Sharing a meal might seem simple, but it is still one of the best ways to bring people together across different cultures and languages.
When filming ended and the cameras were put away, the airfield went back to its usual work. However, for the soldiers, contestants, and guests, the event remained a reminder that the strongest alliances are built by people.
Whether working together in uniform or sharing a table, these personal connections help build the trust, cooperation, and unity that support NATO's mission and collective defense along the Alliance's eastern flank.
