SEMBACH, Germany – The 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command celebrates its 102nd birthday today, July 1, marking over a century of evolution in air defense capabilities.
The unit’s lineage began July 1, 1924, as the 10th Coast Artillery at Fort Adams, Rhode Island, where Soldiers were charged with defending the nation against over-the-horizon threats. Throughout the last century, the command has adapted through numerous wars and redesignations, evolving from harbor guns to antiaircraft artillery, before ultimately establishing itself in Germany in 2011 as the 10th AAMDC.
Today, the 10th AAMDC serves as the premier air and missile defense shield for U.S. Army Europe and Africa. The command's mission extends across NATO's eastern flank and safeguards deployed forces spanning multiple combatant commands. As modern threats evolve, the unit is rapidly expanding its capabilities to include c-UAS, electronic warfare, and digital kill chains that connect allies, partners, sensors, and shooters at high speeds.
Through the Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative, the command continues to build capability at the tactical edge while deepening NATO integration. The 10th AAMDC will continue to innovate and transform how the U.S. Army approaches air and missile defense.
Happy birthday, 10th AAMDC, and remember, you can’t have victory without the shield.
