Camp Blaz Marines strengthen community ties during a visit to a Guam senior center

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP BLAZ, Guam — Laughter echoed through Astumbo Senior Center as Marines with Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Blaz sat alongside Guam's elderly residents, sharing stories, offering a helping hand, and spending time with those who have helped shape the island's community during a community relations event on June 26, 2026.

The visit wasn't centered on completing a project or checking off volunteer hours. Instead, it was about connection. Marines spent the day talking with residents, assisting staff where needed, and taking time to listen to decades of stories and life experiences. Those conversations quickly turned strangers into friends, reminding everyone involved that sometimes the simplest gestures leave the greatest impact.

For Camp Blaz Marines, serving Guam extends beyond training and operational readiness. Being part of the island means investing in the people who call it home and finding opportunities to give back to a community that has welcomed them. This holds especially true for our Camp Blaz Marines that hail from Guam.

"Our partnership with Guam is built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to serving others," said Sgt. Erwin Mariano Jr., a data systems administrator, and Guam native with MCB Camp Blaz. "Spending time with our island's elderly is an opportunity to give back to a community that has welcomed us, while honoring the generations whose experiences and sacrifices have helped shape Guam into what it is today."

The event reflected the partnership that continues to grow between Camp Blaz and the people of Guam. Whether supporting local schools, participating in cleanups, or visiting senior communities, Marines and local organizations work side by side with a common purpose to strengthen the community they share.

Many residents welcomed the opportunity to tell stories from their lives, while Marines listened, laughed, and learned from experiences spanning generations. Those moments served as a reminder that service isn't just measured by the work accomplished, but by the relationships built along the way.

The Marines also visited the Don Don Donki Village and the Macheche Senior Center to help local senior citizens with their daily activities. The service members spent the day reaching high store shelves, loading grocery carts, and sharing some friendly conversation and laughs with the island's elders.

"I think a lot of people don't realize how much something as simple as spending time with someone can mean," said Pfc. Andrew Hays, a network administrator with MCB Camp Blaz. "If we can make someone's day a little better while giving back to the community, then that's time well spent."

As Camp Blaz continues to grow, so does its relationship with Guam. Events like this highlight that the connection between Marines and the island is built not only through shared responsibility, but through genuine care for one another. By working together and supporting the community side by side, Marines and the people of Guam continue to strengthen a partnership founded on trust, respect, and service.
