179th Cyberspace Wing Inspires Future Cyber Leaders at Summer Technology Camp

Local high school students gained valuable technology skills this summer through a hands-on electronics camp supported by members of the 179th Cyberspace Wing, The Ohio State University Mansfield, and the Richland Area Chamber at The Ohio State University Mansfield Campus throughout the month of June.

The camp introduces students to the basics of programming using a version of the C++ computer language. Students also learn how hardware and software work together through activities involving microcontrollers and electronic systems.

The program is designed to help students build critical thinking and problem-solving skills while exploring careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). By working with both software and electronic devices, students gain a better understanding of the technology that powers many of today’s cyber systems.
For the 179th Cyberspace Wing, the camp is an important investment in the future workforce. By engaging local students in technology education, the wing helps develop a pipeline of skilled young people who may one day pursue careers in cyber operations, information technology, engineering, or military service.

“This initiative serves as a critical mechanism for building enduring community partnerships and strengthening next-generation leaders across both the civilian sector and our military instructor cadre,” said Maj. Melissa Steele, Chief of training, assigned to the 179th Cyber operations group at the 179th Cyberspace Wing. “It is a powerful professional development tool that directly enhances instructor leadership and communication skills.”

The partnership also strengthens ties between the military, local schools, businesses, and community organizations. These relationships help create more opportunities for students while building trust and cooperation across the region.

The benefits extend beyond the students. Members of the 179th Cyberspace Wing who serve as instructors gain valuable leadership, teaching, and communication experience. Working with young learners allows Airmen to strengthen their ability to explain complex technical concepts and mentor future generations of technology professionals.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, programs like this camp play an important role in preparing tomorrow’s workforce. By teaching students how hardware and software interact, introducing them to programming concepts, and encouraging teamwork and innovation, the camp helps shape the future of cyber while promoting technological literacy throughout the community.
