The Commander of the 908th Flying Training Wing, Col. Shane M. Devlin, bestowed command of the 908th Mission Support Group to Lt. Col. Stephen Epperson during an assumption of command ceremony at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, June 6, 2026.
Epperson has more than three decades of service with 10 years as a flight medic in the Air National Guard, before commissioning into public health for nearly 20 years. He then entered the logistics career field in 2018.
Devlin spoke first, explaining how Epperson’s experience makes him the right person to lead the 908th MSG.
“Col. Epperson is exactly the kind of leader this wing needs, said Devlin” “He brings a proven track record of mission-first leadership, people development, and decide stewardship of resources. Over his career, he has risen from an aerospace medical technician to a dynamic commander.”
Epperson spent nearly a year as the acting commander of the MSG, demonstrating the proficiency expected of the position.
“As the incoming MSG commander, he arrives with tangible results such as commanding nearly 470 personnel across five squadrons, positioning forces for combatant commander deployments, and driving enterprise solutions that boosted readiness while protecting our people from burnout," said Devlin. “He is a talented architect, hiring and mentoring commanders and frontline leaders, producing chiefs and first sergeants, and building a succession plan that keeps this wing strong for the long haul.”
Devlin closed his comments by reiterating his confidence in Epperson’s leadership abilities.
“Under Lt. Col. Epperson’s command, the 908th MSG will be led with competence, care, and conviction," said Delvin.
After assuming command, Epperson gave thanks to Jesus Christ, Col. Devlin, his family, friends, and other leadership in attendance. Then he spoke about the unit.
“The legacy of this group speaks for itself,” said Epperson. He explained that more than 120 MSG members has recently returned from a deployment with outstanding decorations, three of whom were awarded the Bronze Star.
Epperson closed by stating what he aims to do for the group and its members.
“I am committed to fostering a culture of open communication, trust, and mutual respect”, he said. “Together, we will navigate the challenges ahead, build upon our strong foundation, and elevate this group to new heights.”
