ARTRANS Logistics Fellow honored as Rail Dog

FORT EUSTIS, Va. — Phillip Song, a Logistics Fellow assigned to the U.S. Army Transportation Command’s G‑3 Rail Fleet Management section, was inducted into the Honorary Order of Rail Dogs after excelling during the Railhead Operations Training Group Course at Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif.

Song joined ARTRANS in September 2025 and quickly became a key contributor to the Rail Fleet Management team. His work has strengthened the command’s ability to monitor and audit maintenance across the Domestic Freight Rail Interchange Fleet, a critical component of Army strategic mobility.

The two‑week course, held in April, provides intermediate to advanced instruction in military rail operations. Training includes railcar selection, load planning, usable‑space calculations and real‑time decision‑making during loading operations. MCLB Barstow’s Rail Operations Group is recognized as the Marine Corps’ Center of Excellence for rail operations training.

As part of Class 26‑04, Song supported the redeployment of a National Training Center rotation to Fort Riley, Kansas. The mission involved six trains and 376 railcars, giving students hands‑on experience in large‑scale rail movement operations.

Course cadre selected Song for the Honorary Order of Rail Dogs in recognition of his motivation, technical proficiency and performance in both classroom and field environments. The honor is reserved for students who demonstrate exceptional dedication throughout the course.

“Phillip’s dedication and performance have set a high standard,” said Harry Statia, ARTRANS Rail Fleet Operations Chief. “The expertise he gained from this training will further strengthen the Rail Fleet Management Team’s daily operations.”

Song’s achievement highlights the impact of the Logistics Fellows Program and the growing bench of civilian talent supporting ARTRANS’ rail readiness mission.
