403rd Wing Promotes Readiness in observance of Legal Readiness Week

KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss.— In observance of Law Day, the 403rd Wing legal office is highlighting the critical link between legal preparedness and mission success by encouraging its Reserve Citizen Airmen to strengthen their legal readiness during the upcoming May unit training assembly.

Law Day, which is May 1, was established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as a national event celebrating the principles of government under law. The Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps has historically used this day for outreach and education, a tradition the 403rd Wing is continuing with a focus on practical application through Legal Assistance Readiness Week May 16-22.

This initiative is designed to ensure Airmen are legally prepared for the demands of duty, including deployments and emergencies. For the 403rd Wing, this means providing accessible legal services that help reduce personal stressors and allows Airmen to focus on the mission.

“First and foremost, legal readiness ensures the warfighter can maintain mission focus,” said Lt. Col. Lauren Rosenblatt, the 403rd Wing staff judge advocate. “The last thing we want is for someone to be downrange distracted because they aren’t sure whether they can renew car registration or obtain identification cards for their dependents.”

Rosenblatt emphasized that being legally prepared also provides crucial peace of mind for families. Important legal documents like wills ensure a service member’s wishes are honored and can ease the burden on loved ones in the event of a serious injury or death.

“Loved ones will already be facing unbearable pain and navigating difficult changes,” she said. “Having a will and other documents avoids unnecessary confusion.”

To increase accessibility, the legal office has been proactive. Since January, it has expanded access to services through its “JAG-in-a-box” initiative, bringing judge advocates and paralegals directly to Airmen at the Roberts Consolidated Maintenance Facility to provide on-site legal assistance and draft wills.

During the May UTA, the office will offer expanded legal assistance for the entire day Saturday, a significant increase from the typical half-day schedule. Services will be available on the first floor of the 403rd Wing Headquarters building. A burger burn is also scheduled for lunch May 2 near the headquarters building to encourage members to learn more about the legal services available to them.

While walk-ins are welcome, Rosenblatt advises that appointments are the most efficient option, especially for wills, as they allow the legal team to prepare documents in advance.

Airmen seeking a will, power of attorney, or living will should first visit the Air Force Legal Assistance website at https://aflegalassistance.law.af.mil/apps/aflass_public/bin/main.php to complete the necessary worksheets. After saving the generated ticket number, wing members can contact the legal office to schedule an appointment by calling 228-377-9310. This preparation streamlines the process, although walk-ins without prior paperwork can still be assisted.

Rosenblatt explained that from a legal standpoint, readiness means a deployed service member can have confidence that a trusted family member can manage affairs back home.

“Legal readiness removes personal distractions that might otherwise prevent people from committing their full selves to the mission,” she said.

Key documents include a last will and testament, a living will, and a health care power of attorney. However, since each person's situation is unique, the office provides free, tailored consultations. Without these documents, simple tasks can become major hurdles for families, such as resolving pay issues, managing property, or handling vehicle transactions.

In addition to readiness documents, the legal office assists with a range of civil matters, including landlord-tenant issues, consumer affairs, and family law questions, often serving as the best first stop for guidance.

“We have three free lawyers here at the 403rd, and we truly want to help our service members resolve issues and reduce any possible legal-related stressors,” Rosenblatt said.

The office’s primary focus is on 403rd Wing members, though dependents and retirees may be helped on a space-available basis.

For Rosenblatt, the message is clear: legal preparation is a fundamental component of overall mission readiness.

“We want you and your dependents to feel confident that while you are away from home, they can handle the day-to-day issues that may crop up,” she said. “And finally, we want people to feel secure that if they do pay the ultimate sacrifice for their country, their loved ones will be in the best position possible to honor their wishes.”
