Fort Knox, Ky. — The installation Red Cross is partnering with Jordan Dental Clinic to offer a Volunteer Dental Assistance Training Program that will begin Sept. 29.
May Giulitto, Director of service to the Armed Forces and International Services for the Kentucky Region, said the program will be open to military spouses and civilians.
Giulitto said the program is a six-to-seven-month commitment where participants will encounter a didactic learning style and gain hands-on experience. Participants will also receive Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act training and CPR and first aid certification.
“It’s a good steppingstone program that helps to build a resume of experience,” said Giulitto. “A big pro is a majority of the program is free. This type of training in the civilian world is like $5,000 and they wouldn't even get the hours that we provide through our program.”
Uniforms, course materials, HIPAA and CPR and First Aid training and certifications will be provided free of charge.
Between two and four candidates will be selected to participate, so Giulitto said applicants must complete 50 Red Cross volunteer service hours before the program begins. She said this requirement serves as commitment confirmation.
“It's a full-time, unpaid internship so the commitment has to be there,” said Giulitto. “So, before they receive an application, interested individuals have to come and see me, either via a Microsoft Teams or in-person meeting.
“An application is an application, but I need to verbally make sure they know what they're signing up for.”
Those who do not meet the 50 volunteer-hour prerequisite, but are still interested in participating, may register to become a volunteer by visiting the https://www.redcross.org/volunteer/become-a-volunteer.html.
Giulitto said potential participants do not have to have their 50 hours accrued before they submit their application, but they will need to be completed before the course begins in September.
Interested parties should call the Fort Knox Red Cross at 502-624-2163 to schedule a meeting and request an application.
Applications will be due Aug. 2.
