Coast Guard set to deactivate Lake Erie Islands safety zone

DETROIT — The Coast Guard is set to deactivate the safety zone around the Lake Erie Islands on Lake Erie at noon on Monday, March 9, 2026.

Due to current warming trends, the ice in this area is deemed unsafe by Sector Detroit for recreational use. Therefore, the zone is scheduled to be deactivated and set to open for vessel transits.

The safety area is routinely activated during the winter months when ice conditions reach levels that support recreational use and is designed to protect waterway users, vessels and mariners from hazards associated with winter conditions and navigation.
