SOUDA BAY, Greece – The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) arrived in Souda Bay, Greece, for a scheduled port visit, Jan. 30, 2026.
While in Souda Bay, Sailors assigned to the Bulkeley utilized the support services available at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Souda Bay and the NATO Marathi Pier Complex. They also took the opportunity to explore the nearby city of Chania to experience Greek history, culture, and cuisine while continuing the strong relationship between the United States and Greece.
“The crew continues to represent the best of what America has to offer,” said Cmdr. Michael Schelcher, commanding officer of the Bulkeley. “They are resilient, adaptable, and have a deep desire to excel and achieve success with a burning sense of pride for what they have accomplished. As one of the premier forward-deployed destroyers, Bulkeley and her crew are ready to engage, fight, and win against any adversary while supporting our partners and Allies.”
Bulkeley used the port visit to perform maintenance and replenish supplies to maintain mission readiness.
“Receiving an opportunity for Bulkeley and her crew to recover, refuel, and re-arm with the assistance of NSA Souda Bay and our Greek hosts is essential to continuing our mission,” said Schelcher. “We truly appreciate all of the hospitality and look forward to returning soon to explore more of Greece’s unique culture.”
Bulkeley departed Naval Station Rota, Spain, Jan. 26, 2026, to begin its 5th patrol as one of the five Forward-Deployed Naval Forces-Europe Arleigh-Burke class guided-missile destroyers in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.
U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
