JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas — U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers with the 4th Expeditionary Sustainment Command conducted their first Mass Medical Readiness Event of 2026 at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, Jan. 23-24, 2026.
The event provided essential medical, administrative, and legal services to Army Reserve Soldiers preparing for upcoming deployments and routine readiness requirements. Designed to ensure force health protection, the initiative demonstrates the Army Reserve’s commitment to maintaining a medically prepared and mission-capable force.
The two-day event centralized civilian medical professionals, unit leaders, and support staff to provide comprehensive health assessments. Services included routine medical examinations, dental screenings, vision and hearing tests, immunizations, and laboratory work. These components are critical for Soldiers to remain deployable and responsive to global operational requirements.
“This event is about taking care of our Soldiers and making sure they’re prepared for whatever mission comes next,” said Staff Sgt. David Reyes, the 4th ESC health readiness noncommissioned officer in charge of the event. “Medical readiness directly impacts mission readiness. When our Soldiers are healthy and medically cleared, our units are stronger and more capable.”
While medical providers conducted exams, administrative teams simultaneously updated personnel systems, providing units with real-time readiness data. For many Soldiers, the "one-stop shop" format provided access to care that typically requires multiple appointments spread across several months.
“Having everything in one place makes a huge difference,” said Sgt. Alejandro Luna, a public affairs Soldier assigned to the 205th Theater Public Affairs Support Element. “It saves time and helps us stay focused on training instead of tracking down appointments.”
Medical readiness remains a foundational pillar of Soldier lethality, alongside training and equipment. Large-scale events like this allow commanders to identify readiness trends, allocate resources effectively, and ensure formations remain deployable under the latest Department of War directives.
By investing in preventative care and proactive readiness management, the Army Reserve strengthens its ability to support combatant commands and domestic missions alike.
“These events demonstrate our commitment to taking care of Soldiers while maintaining a ready and resilient force,” Reyes said. “Our Soldiers are our greatest asset, and their readiness is our top priority.”
