U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Tania J. De La Torre Pena received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for meritorious service during an awards ceremony at Commander, Naval Air Force Reserve (CNAFR) in Norfolk, Va., Jan. 9, 2026.
Pena was recognized for her exceptional leadership, dedication and impact within the Navy Reserve aviation enterprise during her tour of duty.
"Her work directly enabled thousands of mishap-free flight hours and supported operational readiness across the force," said Master Sgt. Chasitie Hollingsworth, CNAFR’s Individual Material Readiness List Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge. "She represents the Marine Corps through quiet professionalism, technical mastery and an unwavering commitment to mission accomplishment."
During her tenure at CNAFR, Pena was instrumental in the logistical planning and execution of several major milestones. This included the commissioning of Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-49 (MALS-49), the relocation of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 774 (HMM-774), the commissioning of Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron (VMGR-153) and Marine Fighter Training Squadron 402 (VMFT-402).
Beyond her primary duties, Pena distinguished herself as a leader and mentor. She was selected twice as the Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter, earned Sailor of the Year honors, completed both Drill Instructor School and Sergeant School and earned the Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor tab.
Reflecting on her time at CNAFR, Pena expressed gratitude for the professional development and leadership opportunities afforded during her tour.
“This command has given me the opportunity to grow professionally and personally,” said Pena. “I will take away the leadership examples I have had here and will always be grateful for all the opportunities I was given to better myself.”
Pena will soon report to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, where she will apply her experience and leadership to developing the next generation of Marines.
