NAVAL AIR FACILITY MISAWA, Japan – In a naval message announcing the 2010 SECNAV Energy and Water Management Award recipients, SECNAV Ray Mabus recognized NAF Misawa at the blue level of achievement. This indicates that the facility, located in northern Japan, has a well-rounded energy program.

“Energy specifically is one of my top priorities, and your performance has significantly advanced progress toward achievement of our goals,” said Mabus, via his message.

Award recipients were selected based on their energy program accomplishments in 2009.

“Electricity reduction projects, including installing light occupancy sensors in many office spaces and barracks, have helped reduce our electrical consumption by 500,000 kilowatt hours from last year,” said NAF Misawa’s Public Works Officer, Lt. Dustin Glazier.

In the coming year, Glazier said NAF Misawa has even more energy-reducing programs and projects in store.

“The installation of electrical components at our Hachinohe Fuel Terminal is expected to reduce its electricity bill by at least $10,000 annually,” he said. “We also recently developed and released an Energy and Water Reduction Plan, which provides framework and goals for reducing energy-consumption intensity by 3 percent and water consumption by 2 percent respectively, per year.”

“We are very pleased with NAF Misawa’s blue-level achievement,” said NAF Misawa Commanding Officer, Capt. James Haugen. “This truly was a team effort by Misawa sailors stationed here and within our 12 tenant commands.”
