81st RD Wildcat Named Army’s IG Civilian of the Year

FORT JACKSON, S.C. – The Department of the Army has named Mr. Jeffery Johnson of the 81st Readiness Division’s Inspector General (IG) office the Army’s IG Civilian of the Year for 2025.

“It’s an honor that’s almost too big to comprehend,” said Johnson. “While the initial surprise was humbling, it quickly gave way to a profound sense of responsibility. This recognition isn't just a pat on the back; it’s a testament to a certain level of performance and dedication. Receiving this award is a tremendous honor. I don’t take it lightly when I consider the competition. My fellow competitors were a group of very talented individuals. I accepted the honor as a testament to the hard work and dedication of my IG office here at the 81st RD and the USARC IG office."

The IG of the Year competition is an annual three-day event that brings Inspectors Generals from Commands worldwide to compete. The competition served as a platform to exemplify the precision, dedication, and excellence inherent in the Army Inspector General enterprise.  Competitors are evaluated on the four core functions of an Inspector General: Assistance, Inspections, Investigations, and Teaching & Training. The first two days consist of a comprehensive evaluation process, culminating in a formal board review on the final day. This year’s competition was held virtually.

Johnson was recognized at the completion of the competition for his composed demeanor and thoughtful approach during the formal board process, which demonstrated a level of intentionality that is highly valued in the IG enterprise.

Additionally, Johnson was nominated to compete due to his expertise and actions that enhanced standards across the enterprise. He is routinely called upon to train and assist newly appointed IGs in the southeast region. His mentorship strengthened oversight, standardized procedures, and enhanced the effectiveness of IG operations, ensuring each command upholds the highest standards of integrity and accountability. His efforts were a major contributing factor to the 81st RD’s IG office being named the best in the Army Reserve.   The 81st RD Command Inspector General, Col. Jabar Marks, praised Johnson’s selection. “Mr. Johnson sets the standard of excellence,” said Marks. “His expertise, commitment, and professionalism perfectly represent the values of the Army and the Inspector General’s office.”

The 81st Readiness Division has responsibility for base operations for Army Reserve units throughout the Southeastern United States and Puerto Rico. It is responsible for preparing Soldiers and units to deploy and fight in multi-domain operations and meet current and future combatant commander force requirements.
