MARUF, Afghanistan – Afghan National Police, assisted by coalition forces, thwarted an insurgent attack Aug. 19 resulting in the protection of a village elder and destruction of an improvised explosive device near the district of Maruf in Kandahar province.

The Afghan-led force was conducting a joint patrol in the Wulgay and Wam valleys when more than 10 insurgents began taking shots at them and a village elder. The ANP returned fire forcing the insurgents to flee the area. During a search of the area, the partnered force found a variety of equipment and resources that could have been used in future operations against the people and government of Afghanistan and the International Security Assistance Force.

The combined force also found a pressure-plate IED a few hours later and the ANP disabled the device.

“The Afghan National Police were approached by the villagers who thanked them for destroying the IED,” said a U.S. Special Forces commander in charge of the mission.
