377th Theater Sustainment Command Takes the Reins in Haiti

The 377th Theater Sustainment Command assumed the Joint Logistics Command - Haiti mission yesterday in Port-au-Prince in support of Operation Unified Response, the humanitarian aid/disaster relief effort.

The Transfer of Authority from the 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command of Fort Knox, Ky., to the 377th TSC became effective March 6. It took place after a one-week transition period coordinated by both organizations at a Logistical Support Area in Port Au Prince, Haiti. Maj. Gen. Luis Visot, commanding general of the 377th TSC, an Army Reserve unit headquartered in Belle Chasse, La., now begins working with the Department of State, U.S. Agency for International Development and non-governmental agencies to help restore Haiti to a pre-earthquake condition.

"In addition to bringing their military experience and training to Haiti, many of our Soldiers also bring the heart-felt compassion and empathy of ones who have been affected by a natural disaster. They have experienced this pain and want to help alleviate it for the people of Haiti," Visot said. "It is that kind of experience and perseverance that makes them perfect candidates for the job."

Taking over the mission, the 377th TSC will build on the foundation laid by the 3rd ESC. The command will staff and operate the JLC headquarters, manage the acquisition, transportation and distribution of supplies and commodities, in addition to moving units out of Haiti when their missions are accomplished. The 377th TSC will also provide sustainment to service members.

"We couldn't have been given a better head start," Command Sgt. Maj. Michael D. Meehan said about the 3rd ESC Soldiers. "We're thankful for them setting us up for success, and it has been an honor to have served alongside of our fellow logisticians."

The 377th TSC, many of whose Soldiers have first-hand knowledge of living through the Hurricane Katrina disaster, landed at Toussaint L'Ouverture Airport in Port-au-Prince Feb. 28. They coordinated with their counterparts from the 3rd ESC for the last week to affect a smooth and thorough transition.

With over 44,000 Soldiers spanning 42 states, the 377th TSC is the largest command in the U.S. Army Reserve. It is an operational headquarters for logistics functions within a given area of operations and is uniquely qualified to plan, control and synchronize at all levels of logistical sustainment.

Establishing a baseline for the quality of life and raising that bar through logistical support is where the 377th TSC excels. With their motto "Can Do, Anytime, Anywhere;" proven on countless missions here at home and around the globe, the 377th TSC stands prepared to assist in the recovery of Haiti and its people.
