Tuskegee Airman of the Week: Jan. 17-23, 2010

JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq -- Staff Sgt. Mia Williams of the 332nd Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron is the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing's Tuskegee Airman of the Week for Jan. 17-23.

"Sgt. Williams has undoubtedly improved her workplace and JBB," said Brig. Gen. Craig Franklin, 332nd AEW commander. "She has shown her versatility in handling a demanding work load, volunteering numerous hours and continuing her education while deployed here."

After congratulating the new winner in front of wing leadership, Franklin presented Williams with the award and a commander's coin at the wing headquarters, Jan. 28.


Williams, the NCO in charge of the commander's support staff, managed 11 assigned duties while serving on her second deployment. She identified and fixed five information assurance errors and ran a squadron security policy execution.

The Hampton Roads, Va., native also served as a unit travel representative. As such, she handled more than 200 personnel travel itineraries. In doing so, she sustained a 100 percent on-time rate for the two and a half months she has been appointed to the extra duty.

Williams revamped her unit's processing checklist by pioneering efficient one-stop procedures.

"It is an extremely overwhelming feeling to be recognized as the Tuskegee Airman of the Week," said Williams. "I am so happy and proud to represent the Tuskegee heritage, my squadron and the base."

Among her accomplishments, Williams also volunteered her time transporting patients off the helicopter pad to the Air Force Theater Hospital.

Williams, deployed from Hurlburt Field Air Force Base, Fla., also completed all of the requirements to obtain her Community College of the Air Force degree as well as lead workouts for the base populace to attend.

Williams was nominated by her supervisor Lt. Col. Stephen Jost, 332nd EOSS commander.

"Sgt. Mia Williams is the one person that is literally making my squadron run," said Jost. "Without her, I would fail. She maintains her positive attitude - despite all I've asked her to do. She has remained steadfast and loyal with a quiet, professional demeanor I feel is well above her peers. She selflessly provides excellent customer service to the Airmen in our squadron, a top priority of mine, and she does it very well."

Airmen between the ranks of E-1 and E-5 are eligible to become the 332nd AEW Tuskegee Airman of the Week, based on accomplishments on- and off-duty.
