SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- The 4th Civil Engineer Squadron hosted Fire Prevention Week at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, Oct. 9-15, 2022.
According to the National Archives and Records Administration’s Library Information Center, FPW is the longest running public health and safety observance on record, and this year’s motto was, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape,” placing an emphasis on preparedness.
“We have been doing community outreach events to emphasize the importance of fire prevention,” said Senior Airman Rylie Dow, 4th CES driver operator. “Be aware of the hazards at home so an escape is planned, and fire can be safely handled and prevented.”
According to Eric Harper, 4th CES assistant chief of fire prevention, FPW has been recognized for 100 years and has helped create a downward trend in fire-related deaths.
“If you look over the years, fires have gone down,” said Harper. “You still see stories in the news about house fires, but a lot of times people get out successfully. Plan and exercise a plan, that makes a difference.”
“We want the public to know that we are out here for them so if they have any questions, we can help,” said Harper.
