SAN ANTONIO – (May 26, 2022) Navy pride was on full display in south Texas. Both on and off the big screen, movie-goers were witness to how amazing America’s Navy is during the long-awaited premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick” at the beautiful Santikos Entertainment Palladium. Invited to a private showing of the film by retired Master Chief, Paul “Saint” St. Sauver of Aligned Education Foundation, members of Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) San Antonio joined over two hundred guests, which included Future Sailors, family, and friends, to watch the sequel of arguably one the greatest Naval Aviation films.
Excitement filled the stunning mezzanine as guests arrived and checked in for the evening’s main event. Once seated, guests were welcomed and thanked for attending by hosts “Saint” and Juliet Gudgel, both of which are Aligned Education Foundation Military Liaison team members. According to its website, Aligned Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) service organization run by a group of E-9 Senior Enlisted Leaders (SELs) who are known as “Team 9” that has remained dedicated to the mission of mentoring Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coastguardsmen, and Guardians.
After the welcoming words from the Foundation, NTAG San Antonio Commanding Officer, CDR Stephanie Simoni offered greetings and insight on what Naval life is like and how Naval culture serves as the film’s backdrop. Final remarks leading into the film were provided by NTAG San Antonio’s Education Specialist, Juan Rodriguez.
From the film’s first musical note to the last credit, “Top Gun: Maverick” did not disappoint as it continues the story of fictional Naval Aviator, CPT Pete “Maverick” Mitchell played by the talented Tom Cruise who first starred as the overconfident, yet immensely talented “Maverick” in the original film released in 1986. The film provided a thrill ride throughout and its fade to black was met with an ovation.
Guests gathered in venue walkways to talk about their favorite parts of the film and what it meant to them. Some talked of the memories stoked by the new film and nostalgia is brought. Others raved about the action-packed scenes. When asked to reflect on the film and evening, CDR Simoni shared, “This was an outstanding event for NTAG San Antonio Sailors, Future Sailors, family, and friends. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ certainly paid homage to the original ‘Top Gun’ film by showcasing our current Navy in a spectacular fashion in addition to an engaging storyline.
“The film did not disappoint. The sequel will undoubtedly have an impact commensurate with the original and will inspire a new generation with interest in the United States Navy and Naval Aviation.”
As the evening ended, “Saint” was absolutely thrilled by the evening’s outcome. “What a momentous event that allowed us to bring active-duty members, veterans, and Future Sailors together. It was amazing to talk to current and future Sailors,” said Saint.
