PAKTYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan — Soldiers of the Afghan national army 203rd Corps learn how to fire the M-16 rifle as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization weapons training program at Forward Operating Base Thunder, Gardez, Afghanistan, Oct. 5. The training is designed to transition to a professional army.

The M-16 rifle offers improved target accuracy per round compared to the former weapons of choice, the AK-47. During training, ANA senior cadre teach the four fundamentals of marksmanship for sustainment: proper firing positions, breathing and aiming techniques and trigger squeeze control.

After graduating the course, the soldiers will continue to practice skills they learned to further improve their proficiency.
