Warfare Center Hosts Technical Exchange Meeting

Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Atlantic hosted the 2020 Naval Innovative Science and Engineering (NISE) Technical Exchange Meeting (TEM) February 11-12 in Charleston, South Carolina.

The NISE TEM allows for scientists and engineers to team up and learn more about projects within Department of Navy and Department of Defense sectors. NISE is focused on improving the Government’s human capital and facilities of the Naval laboratories while delivering innovative solutions to the warfighter.

The fourth annual event showcased the 2019 NISE projects from across Navy laboratories. More than 300 people attended the conference where 160 posters were displayed and 16 panels and plenary sessions were held.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Research, Development, Test and Evaluation William Bray was the keynote speaker.

“Collaboration is key to accelerate delivery of warfighting capabilities and align with the Navy’s priorities,” Bray said.

Bray described the Naval Research & Development Establishment (NR&DE) 10mYear Strategic Plan which focuses on four lines of effort: accelerate delivery of warfighting capabilities; create a high performance ecosystem; empower the next generation workforce; and construct a 21st century technology laboratory and range infrastructure.

The NR&DE 10 year strategic plan seeks to ensure the Navy has the policies, personnel, and infrastructure necessary to rapidly discover, mature and transition new science, technologies and engineering innovations that lead to advancements in capabilities. The goals of the NISE program support the goals of the strategic plan by growing the technical capabilities of the workforce through research projects and providing technical training and other workforce development innovations.

Fostering creativity and stimulating exploration of cutting-edge science and technology serves as a proving ground for new concepts in research and development; and supports high-value, potentially high-risk research and development in order to increase the speed of technology transition to the fleet and warfighter.

NIWC Atlantic Chief Technology Officer Dr. Suzanne Huerth described a few cross-warfare center, NISE-funded projects and appreciated seeing the amount of research presented from the warfare centers at these meetings over the years.

“We could not have completed these efforts without your work and without NISE,” Huerth said.

While at the event, NIWC Atlantic Executive Director Peter C. Reddy shared some of the challenges and opportunities with delivering the Navy’s demand for new technologies and equipment and emphasized the importance of collaborating with other principle investigators and warfare centers to create innovative solutions.

“I look forward to attending next year’s NISE TEM and seeing the results of collaborations enabled through these yearly meetings. Innovative NISE funded projects are accelerating the Navy’ and Marine Corps warfighting capabilities,” Huerth said.

As a part of Naval Information Warfare Systems Command, NIWC Atlantic provides systems engineering and acquisition to deliver information warfare capabilities to the naval, joint and national warfighter through the acquisition, development, integration, production, test, deployment and sustainment of interoperable command, control, communications, computer, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, cyber and information technology capabilities.
