KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan national security forces and International Security Assistance Forces are nearing completion of Operation Mountain Fire, in Afghanistan's Nuristan province.
The operation involved ANSF and ISAF troops providing safety and protection for Afghans from the village of Barge Matal.
"This operation also shows that Afghan and coalition forces can go anywhere, anytime and successfully conduct any operation we choose to defeat the enemies of Afghanistan," said U.S. Army Col. Randy A. George, commander of Task Force Mountain Warrior.
After securing the town from insurgents during the morning of July 12, ANSF and ISAF troops discovered several large weapons caches.
Security forces also confiscated more than 80 voter registration cards that insurgents had taken from local women. The cards are evidence of the insurgents' efforts to disrupt Afghanistan's national elections, scheduled for late August.
Once the operation is completed, ANSF will continue to protect the town against any insurgent activity.
