Seabees Upgrade Marine Physical Training Facility

AL ASAD AIR BASE, Iraq - Physical training and readiness are both vital to the success of service members and their missions. The need for adequate facilities to support coalition forces at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, resulted in a recent renovation of an existing pre-engineered facility by personnel of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 24.

The Seabees utilized the vacant building to create a fully functional exercise facility. Over the course of several weeks, the crew of builders installed rubber flooring to create a more suitable exercise surface.

NMCB 24 construction electricians replaced the existing generator supplying power to the building with a larger unit, more capable of powering the newly installed light fixtures, air conditioning, and the required electrical rewiring of the structure.

The new physical training facility was a much welcome expansion the Marines of the II Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, currently stationed at Al Asad.

Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 24 is headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama. It is a reserve unit, with home detachments located in the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and West Virginia. NMCB 24 began its second deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in the spring of 2009. Currently it is headquartered at Al Asad Air Base, Al Anbar province, Iraq.
