Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton started their holiday season with the 2019 Tree Lighting Celebration at the Pacific Views Marine Corps Exchange, Nov. 23, 2019. After families enjoyed snowball fights, sledding, carnival games and rides, they viewed the 50-foot statuesque tree covered with more than 30,000 twinkling lights and ornaments illuminate the exchange parking lot.
“I’m so glad to see the Camp Pendleton community come here to celebrate because so much of what we do is focused on our work, and this is one of the few times we can get together and just celebrate as a family.” said Brig. Gen. Dan Conley, commanding general, Marine Corps Installations West, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. “I’m thankful for everybody that’s out here and hope everybody has a happy holiday.”
Families were offered food, face painting, games and several activities to enjoy during the event. This is Camp Pendleton's fifth year hosting the tree lighting celebration, and the event grows more and more ever year with over 19,000 people in attendance this year. Several departments of the base played a big hand in the execution of the celebration.
“Just to be able to give back and be here and watch everything transform into something impactful for Marines, that’s what’s important.” said Scott Grahm, Marketing Director for Marine Corps Community Center.
Participants had the chance to win several prizes, ranging from gift certificates to small door prizes. Toward the end of the event, attendees were able to witness the 50-foot holiday tree light the night sky. Conley was assisted by 6-year-old Isebella Smith with the countdown and flipping the switch for the holiday tree’s lights.
For many, the tree lighting celebration was more than holiday music and lights. To Staff Sgt. Matthew Bruce, a father or four, the event meant making memories with his family.
“We’ve been coming for three years now, the kids love it, we have a great time.” Bruce said.
