134th Air Refueling Wing hosts local civic leaders on refueling flight

Today, the 134th Air Refueling Wing invited civic leaders from local communities to learn more about the mission.

Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs, Knoxville City Mayor Indya Kincannon, and Maryville City Mayor Tom Taylor all traveled out to the base for a mission brief and a ride on a KC-135r Stratotanker. In addition to witnessing an in-air refueling, the mayors and their teams were able to learn more about the impact the 134th ARW has on the local community and the vital role the Wing plays in our national defense.

“It’s really impressive to know that this is right here in our community,” said Knoxville City Mayor Indya Kincannon. “I was also glad to hear about the incredible economic impact of the Wing and I’m looking forward to continue to work with the Tennessee Air National Guard.”

To witness an in-air refueling from the birds-eye view of the refueling pod is a rare opportunity. It impressed on the visitors just how much training and coordination are required to pull off this task in the dozens of sorties the 134th ARW performs monthly.

“It’s amazing to me that the refueling is all done by hand,” said Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs. “Watching the F-15s approach, refuel, then fly away in a matter of seconds was a truly an incredible experience.”

Most importantly, the guests got a better understanding of the community impact of the 134th ARW, which employs over 650 people full-time and nearly 1100 part-time.

“These kinds of engagements are a great way to improve communication between the 134th and the community,” said Lt. Col. Travers Hurst, 134th Executive Officer. “We appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate the job we do and share the importance of our mission to our guests.”

The 134th ARW hosts many visitors throughout the year, welcoming civic groups, community leaders, and students to learn more about the Air National Guard and the 134th ARW’s refueling mission.
