Brussels, Belgium -- Students, families, and many members of the Brussels community celebrated two special events Oct. 19, 2019 at the Sterrebeek annex - the official opening of the Brigand Athletic Complex, and the groundbreaking of the new Brussels American School.
These two very important projects represent years of hard work, planning and partnership between the Department of Defense Education Activity, the Brussels American School, the Corps of Engineers, and U.S Army Garrison Benelux.
As a symbol, leaders joined community members and Brigand, their mascot to cut a huge blue ribbon, marking the official opening of the Brigand Athletic Complex.
After the ribbon cutting ceremony, the group walked to the site of the new school for the groundbreaking ceremony. “This is a huge step towards European Infrastructure Consolidation,” said Col. Sean Hunt Kuester, USAG Benelux commander.
The new school complex and other construction on Sterrebeek annex will result in many upgrades that will help bring the community together even further. “It will continue to educate our unique clientele,” said Collette Tate, principal of the Brussels American School.
The Brussels American School has a combined population of 300 students: elementary, middle, and high. The majority of the students there are American, but the school also provides education for international youngsters from more than 25 nations.
“Today is all about our students,” said Kent Worford, DoDEA Europe West District superintendent.
