MARINE CORPS AIR STATION BEAUFORT, SC – “Not only can a Marine run, lift, jump, and crawl but they can also shoot, swim, and fight.” said Jason Clark, the High Intensity Tactical Training Coordinator aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. HITT Coordinators are strength and conditioning coaches who have gone to school and attained certifications in their field.
Clark is a former Marine and combat veteran who served from 2001-2009.
“I came in the Marine Corps and a thing called 9/11 happened, from there I went overseas and spent three years and nine months between Iraq and stops in Japan,” Clark said. “From there I went to the Martial Arts Center of Excellence in Quantico, where I was on staff as an instructor trainer.”
Clark’s drive to learn more about fitness led him to become a Martial Arts Instructor Trainer, and a Marine Corps Water Survival Instructor. After spending about a year as an instructor trainer, Clark received orders to become a Drill Instructor aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depots Parris Island. Eventually ending his active duty service in September of 2009.
“I got into fitness at a young age. My whole life I wanted to learn more about fitness,” Clark said.
After the Marine Corps, Clark followed his passion and turned it into a career.
“For the past 10 years, I’ve been in the civilian world and all I’ve done is fitness,” Clark said.
Through his studies Clark now understand fitness on a deeper level. He not only focuses on the physical fitness, but also how to train athletes emotionally, spiritually and psychologically.
Clark’s background led him to the point where he is now, which is to teach High Intensity Tactical Training and help the Marine Corps succeed at making well-rounded tactical athletes.
“As the High Intensity Tactical Training Coordinator I offer Unit PT, as well as offering sessions already in the schedule,” Clark said.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. a HITT class takes place open to all, but active duty gets priority. Starting in October, the first and third Mondays of the month Clark will provide Marines the opportunity to do the obstacle course. On the 18th of October, he will host a hike to help Marines improve their tactical fitness.
“Fitness as a whole is complicated, but at the same time, it is more readily available than ever before,” Clark said. “Promoting fitness so that Marines are strong, fast, and have great endurance is amazing. But at the very top of these is the idea that we need people who have longevity and who are durable.”
Injury prevention is the pinnacle of Clark’s training. Although fitness is a complicated subject, Marines and Sailors have resources readily available to help them train.
“Understanding that you only get one body, you need to start from the beginning and learn how to take care of it properly,” he said.
