From Team to Command: Green Beret returns to Fort Campbell after 17 years

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — New Special Forces leader is determined to always be there for the troops.

Command Sergeant Major Hector J. Valleortiz took on the mantle of leadership of 4th Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), as Command Sgt. Maj. Sean D. Mullins passed him the colors in a Change of Responsibility Thursday morning at Gabriel Field on post.

“My focus as Command Sergeant Major for 4th Battalion is to be there for the troops and support them to the fullest,” Valleortiz said.

Valleortiz began his Army career 25-years-ago as a mechanized infantryman.

In 1999, Valleortiz graduated from the Special Forces Assessment and Selection and the Special Forces Qualification Course. He then donned his Green Beret here at Fort Campbell with 3rd Battalion, 5th SFG(A).

Valleortiz then served with 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Eglin Air Force Base,Fla., in 2002.

Valleortiz previous position was the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Special Operations Command Forward Yemen and the Senior Enlisted Advisor for the Central Command Joint Response Force.

Mullins is moving on to the 1st Special Forces Training Group at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Since July 2015, Mullins worked as the senior enlisted leader for Alpha Company, 4th Bn., 5th SFG(A), until he assumed the command sergeant major role for the battalion in Oct. 2017.

“This job has spoiled me. We have a solid team, and I thank you for making the assignment the most rewarding of my career,” said Mullins in his parting words during the ceremony.
