1st Medical Brigade Runs for Safety

FORT HOOD, Texas - The 1st Medical Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) held a brigade safety run, May 28, Fort Hood, Texas, in support of III Corps Safety Stand-down Day.

The brigade gathered for first formation behind the 13th ESC gym and, after properly stretching to warm the muscles and reduce risk of injury, went on a different sort of run.

Rather than leaders simply addressing safety issues with Soldiers through briefings, the run served as a sort of practical briefing, augmented by visual safety displays along the route that encouraged Soldiers to find embedded safety violations related to popular summertime activities such as boating, cycling, motorcycle operation and outdoor grilling.

"Our approach is obviously working since we had people who passed by these displays, and other Soldiers in outside organizations correcting our Soldiers on the violation of our displays," said Col. Robert Tenhet, commander, 1st Med. Bde., 13th ESC.

The innovative run helped drive home the importance of safety to the Soldiers.

"Safety is learning the right things to do in order to avoid hazards, while still enjoying everyday life," said Cpl. Jarod Coster, 502nd DCAS, 1st Med. Bde., 13th ESC.

The safety run helped the Silver Knights kick start the 101 Days of Summer Safety campaign, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
