5th Armored Brigade NCO Recognized as a Hometown Hero by UTEP

EL PASO, Tx.- Sgt. First Class Richard Cortez Sr. was recognized as a "Hometown Hero" by the University of Texas at El Paso during the First Quarter of the University of Nevada versus UTEP football game Saturday, September 21st, 2019. UTEP pays tribute to outstanding Soldiers, first responders, public safety officers and community members for their selfless service to the City of El Paso and surrounding communities.

"It was an honor to be selected as a Hometown Hero," said Cortez. "My family really loves living in El Paso. It's a fantastic community that has become our home thanks to the hospitality and friendliness of the people. I can't say enough about how great the community has been to us.”

Cortez has served with distinction in the Army for more than 14 years including three combat deployments. He is currently stationed at Fort Bliss assigned to 2nd Battalion, 326nd Field Artillery Regiment, 5th Armored Brigade, First Army Division West. Cortez attended the game with his sons Richard Jr. and Alexzander and his wife Tina.
