SAN ANGELO, Texas – Two Sailors, both instructors at the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit Lemoore, Learning Site Goodfellow, and key members of the Navy Det. Goodfellow, displayed outstanding professionalism while saving the life of a civilian while boating on Lake Nasworthy, Aug. 10.
Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 1st Class Cody Sykes and Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) 1st Class Matthew Wantoch were boating with other cadre members of the Lewis F. Garland Fire Academy when their boat was flagged down by a group of panicking boaters. The boaters asked for a medic, and luckily for them, both Sailors are qualified Emergency Medical Responders.
A man in his mid-20s had fallen from a boat and gotten his ankle and calf mangled and caught in the boat’s propeller. Wantoch and Sykes directed a passing jet ski to find and return with the lake patrol and then jumped in to provide immediate medical support. They directed other instructors to support the injured civilian and proceeded to free the man’s leg and apply a tourniquet to prevent further blood loss.
The San Angelo Fire Department and the Nasworthy Lake Patrol both praised the two petty officers for their quick thinking and outstanding professionalism during a chaotic and difficult rescue scene. They also shared without Wantoch’s and Sykes’ actions, the injured man would have died before reaching the shoreline.
“I am just happy that we could be in the right place at the right time to help,” shared Sykes.
The Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) Det. Goodfellow is one of two detachments assigned to CIWT. With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past three years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
